If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you likely need immediate dental attention to prevent further damage or relieve severe pain.
If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or severe head/neck trauma, call 911 or go to the ER immediately.
Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing edge), never the root. Keep it moist at all times. Try to gently place it back in the socket if possible; otherwise, keep it in milk or inside your cheek. Call us immediately.
Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and use an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if there is swelling. Call us, especially if you have a fever or noticeable swelling.
Save any tooth fragments you can find. Cover any sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your tongue and cheek. Avoid chewing on that side and call us right away.
Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on the affected side. A lost crown or filling leaves your tooth vulnerable to damage and sensitivity, so call us as soon as possible to get it replaced.
If you experience a fever, facial swelling, or trouble breathing/swallowing, seek urgent medical evaluation (ER or 911). Otherwise, call us immediately for emergency dental care, as infections can spread quickly.
